The Small-Business Operations Checklist: Processes, People, Systems, and Continuity

A general operations checklist covering process documentation, role clarity, software inventory, access, recurring obligations, and continuity planning.

This checklist is a starting point for reviewing how a small business runs. It is organized around four areas: processes, people, systems, and continuity. Use it as a self-assessment, and return to it each year or whenever the business changes significantly.

It is general operational education. It is not legal, tax, accounting, or financial advice. Where a checklist item touches a legal or regulatory obligation, confirm the requirement with a qualified professional.

1. Processes

2. People

3. Systems

4. Data access and backups

5. Recurring obligations

6. Continuity and transition

How to use the results

Count the unchecked boxes in each section. Unchecked items in the processes and recurring-obligations sections often cause the most day-to-day friction, so start there. Choose two or three items to address in the next quarter, assign owners, and review progress at your next planning meeting.

If you would like help working through the checklist, our Business Process Optimization and Succession & Transition Readiness services cover these areas. You can also contact us to discuss where to begin.
